interior of Mazda vehicle

There’s nothing worse than driving a vehicle in the cold that refuses to heat up. There are four reasons why this might be happening. Your vehicle could have low coolant levels, a blocked or leaking heater core, a thermostat that’s stuck open, and broken controls. The Importance of Regular Oil Changes

1. Low Coolant

Coolant plays an important role in maintaining an engine’s operating temperature and preventing it from overheating. It also helps carry the excess heat to your cabin through the heater core. If your vehicle is low on coolant, there’s nothing to help absorb the heat that eventually warms a car’s interior. There are a handful of reasons why your vehicle could be low on coolant, including external leaks.

2. Blocked/Leaking Heater Core

A blocked heater core can hinder the flow of coolant and hinder how much heat you’re getting in the cabin. Debris and rust build-up are common causes for this. A leaky heater core can also impact the output of heat. You’ll know you have a leaking heater core if you see foggy windows or smell a sweet scent inside your vehicle.

3. Malfunctioning Thermostat

A thermostat opens and closes to regulate coolant flow. If this becomes damaged, your thermostat might be stuck open. This means it won’t be able to circulate the engine to produce hot air. Age and corrosion are two common reasons why a thermostat gets stuck in the open position.

4. Broken Parts

If you can’t get your vehicle to blow hot air into your vehicle’s cabin, the heater might not be the thing to blame. You could have a problem with the blower fan, which is responsible for taking the hot air from the heater core and pushing it through the vents. It’s also possible the heater controls on your console aren’t working correctly.
